Help make a BEGINNERS' BOOKBINDING CLASS available for free in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil!
Copilot founder Stephanie Sauer will be teaching a free beginners’ bookbinding course this July to kids and adults, ages 9 to 90, in Rio de Janeiro’s Gamboa neighborhood. Gamboa is one of Rio’s critically underserved and impoverished areas. In the middle of it, community member and artist Thelma Vilas Boas has opened Lanchonete <> Bar Delas, a community center that serves as a safe haven for women. Occupying an old dive bar, Lanchonete <> Bar Delas subverts the traditionally male-dominated bar scene to provide a gathering place, classes, music, services, and food to all who visit. The center operates entirely in the gift economy (that is, by donation).
In July, Lanchonete <> Bar Delas will be hosting a series of printmaking workshops in the weeks prior to her class, and students will have the opportunity to bind their freshly printed works when they meet.
Stephanie will be donating her time, but is asking for support in purchasing supplies for the class.

All class supplies will then remain at Lanchonete <> Bar Delas for students and other community members to use (with careful supervision for the youngest bookbinders, of course). Our goal is to donate four sets of basic bookbinding tools, each containing the following:
1 self-healing cutting mat ($15)
1 metal straight edge ($10)
1 bone/Teflon folder ($18)
1 aul ($4)
1 x-acto knife ($3)
1 book cradle ($5)
1 packet bookbinding needles ($3)
1 spool of bookbinding thread ($7)
= One full kit ($65)
